Here are a few of our favorites from the shoot. Tastefully furnished in a vaguely Scandinavian-retro manner, the Ex Machina interiors deliberately eschew sci-fi genre cliche, Digby said. Pop into the kitchen for complimentary cake and wine, then sweat out the carbs in the on-site traditional Swedish sauna. Everything that makes us men. Everything we men talk about or not , what interests us, what inspires, moves and drives us.

Juvet Landscape Hotel: A Norwegian Paradise with Windows to the Dramatic Landscape
One of the local residents at Gudbrandsjuvet, Knut Slinning, is building a landscape hotel. The idea emerged at another site, Aurland, but was not realized there.
Basically each room is a detached small independent house with one, or sometimes two of the walls constructed in glass. The landscape in which these rooms are placed is by most people considered spectacularly beautiful and varied and the topography allows a layout where no room looks at another. In this way every room gets its own surprising view of a dramatic piece of landscape, always changing with the weather and the time of the day and the season.

The client, Knut Slinning, is a local resident. The idea emerged as an opportunity to exploit breathtaking scenery with minimal intervention, allowing locations which would otherwise be prohibited for reasons of conservation. Instead of the conventional hotel, with guest rooms stacked together in one large building, the Landscape Hotel distributes the rooms throughout the terrain as small individual houses. Every house has one or two walls that are entirely built in glass, thus the experienced space in each room is maximized. Through careful orientation every room gets its own exclusive view of a beautiful and unique piece of the landscape, always changing with the season, the weather, and the time of day.

Norway’s Stunning Juvet Landscape Hotel Is a Dream Getaway
Earlier this year we travelled to the idyllic mountains on the western coast of Norway, where we visited the Juvet Landscape Hotel. The geography of Norway is defined by its mountains. With nearly the entire country covered by a thick ice sheet during the last ice age, deep valleys and gorges were created as the glaciers retreated, leaving behind an awe inspiring landscape, and the most rugged coastline in the world. It was in this remote mountainous region that Norwegian Knut Slinning bought a holiday retreat in , and 30 years later, he is the proud owner of the Juvet Landscape Hotel, the perfect place to escape the worries of the world, and feel the power of nature. RBM Noor, various configurations. RH Mereo, various configurations. Faced with the challenge of creating a comfortable retreat taking advantage of the epic views, whilst having the minimal effect upon the environment, the design is quite unique. Instead of one large building, the hotel is made up of small individual houses. Each of the 9 wood paned pods scattered throughout the woods has one or two walls entirely of glass, which through careful orientation offer each room an exclusive view of the surrounding environment, without seeing any other building.

Norway by Design and History with Juvet
I recently happened upon a place which looks too good to keep just to myself. I was watching Ex-Machina recently and in a theme that has been consistent this year — i. The film was good but by the time I finished watching it, I was well and truly in love with The Juvet hotel featured in the movie. In a small village called Valldall in Norway. Not much else to say on that front. This begs the question — where in the world is Valldall?

At least now one sits in one of the armchairs in front of the window, which releases the wild landscape of the Norwegian Valldal in the frameless widescreen. In the Juvet Landscape Hotel it quickly becomes clear that nature sets the tone here.

Scattered throughout the terrain along the river-gorge banks with minimum intervention of the land, each house has large plate glass walls, and an individualistic, private view, hence the no-curtain policy. Landscapes are cleverly accentuated by the inky interior timbered walls, treated with oil containing black pigments. The striking architectural lines contrast so fabulously with the carpet of green lushness, taming the harshness of the magnificent Alstad wilderness beyond, it is no wonder Juvet was the movie set for the cult film, Ex-Machina. The Juvet sits as camouflaged wooden structures made from pine, set upon massive steel rods drilled into the rock bed with vertical timbers sitting in conformity with the trunks of birch, aspen and pine. The scene is cleverly balanced by the solid robustness of the original aged farmhouse and former cowshed that provide the communal focal points for all meals — heavy and deeply rooted in the hardships of times past — the contrast is sublime.
Dramatic snow-capped mountains rise from the foot of my bed when I wake up. I toss the duvet aside and admire the lush green grass of the valley floor, dotted with yellow spots of dandelions, and the icy blue river rushing through it. It's several minutes before my eyes adjust and I even begin to focus on what's inside the room.
